Glenn Campbell

The Rhinestone Cowboy himself, Glen Campbell, rode into town and delivered an end of tour performance that promised much more than it delivered.

Not that the 74-year-old American country legend is in anyway lacking in talent - at his best he’s superb as both a singer and guitarist. This show however fell sadly short of the mark with Glen forgetting the lyrics to several songs including, extraordinarily, Gentle on my Mind which he must have sung a trillion times.

He made light of it and, like the old trouper he is, joked about his age and being “confused”. Frankly he just seemed tired and, after 12 gigs in 13 days plus an overnight journey from Manchester, this was hardly surprising.

The show still had its moments though with big hits like Galveston, By The Time I Get To Phoenix and Wichita Lineman proving solid gold crowd-pleasers.

But the evening wasn’t all nostalgia with covers of Foo Fighters and KT Tunstall numbers alongside the traditional Campbell catalogue.

His backing band meanwhile featured three of his children - eldest daughter Debby on backing vocals, youngest daughter Ashly on banjo, keyboards and guitar and son Cal on drums.
